Does this method still work with the most recent update to GB?

Hey guys...My phone just did an OTA update to Android 2.3. I am trying to root my phone and none of the methods listed here seem to work. I have a Sangung Fascinate with Verizon.

Can someone help a late comer to the game?

Thanks

Re: Tools and Quick links:pLEASE Read post#1 before posting in th

My phone tried to do an OTA update last night, and after I let it sit for an hour, it was stuck on the Samsung logo screen. Wouldn't continue to boot up. Took the battery out, let it sit numerous times, nothing happened. It would turn on and sit on the Samsung logo.

Rep at Verizon sent me links to try to wipe it. None of those worked. Everytime I would plug my phone in and set it to "downloading" and hit start in Odin, it would sit for an indefinite amount of time "setting a connection." This is Odin 4.43 for Android. I downloaded all the files it said I needed to, I even tried the "Stock-i500-VZW-System.tar.md5" - I don't know if it was a bad download, but it was the only place I could find it. Nothing I've tried seems to work.

When I go to the android system recovery (like for a hard reset), it says this in red text:

E:failed to open /res/recovery.fstab (No such file or directory)
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/command]
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/command
E:unknown volume for path [/data/fota]

#MANUAL MODE#
E:unknow volume for path [/cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log]
E:Can't mount /cache/recovery/recovery_kernel_log
E:copy_kernel_file :: can't open /cache/recovery_kernel_log
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/log]
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/log
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/last_log]
E:can't mount /cache/recovery/last_log
E:can't open /cache/recovery/last_log
E:unknown volume for path [/cache/recovery/command]

I don't care if my phone is rooted or not, I just want it to work. I don't qualify for an upgrade, and I don't have any money to buy one out of contract.

Please help? I have no idea what to do...

allandpowerfulkt,

Looks like a bunk download. Just ODIN the full release. That would be your best bet.

Download the full release from here:(full tar package/radio)(EH03){odin/heimdall} Verizon 2.3.5 TWGB (cwr ver as well) - xda-developers

Follow the instructions in post # 2 below, replacing EC09 with EH03 from thread above.

Good luck

Taken from thread http://forums.androidcentral.com/ve...ota-update-eh03-now-stuck-samsung-screen.html

So this is what happened to me... as I said above, my Fascinate had just updated to 2.3. I was able to get teh Odin method to work; sort of...

All indications were that the root worked. However, after I rebooted the data connection was gone. No matter what I did, I could not get the data connection back. Plus, when I went to de-bloat my phone, I found tha the rootinging really did not work at all. I was not able to change the attributes of any file or rename any file...

So I sent the next three hours recovering my phone. I was able to fully recover my phone.

So, do anyone think the last update made it hard or impossible to root?

Not working for me. Pushes files ok, then I go through the 3 minute delay. Then I get SUCCESSFULLY EXPLOITED, Installing permanent root files, but then it fails saying mount: Operation Not Permitted,
Then "unable to chmod" a couple of times. Phone was upgrade to 2.3.5 prior to attempting the root.
I would just like to Root my phone to add wireless tether.
Thanks for any help advice that can be provided.

All the methods in this thread are now worthless with verizon's 2.3.5 update.

My fascinate is running gingerbread, and this fails every time. When it tries to mount, it says operation not permitted. Also can't create su, busybox or superuser.apk. It says there is a read only file system. Ideas?

Thanks for the instructions!

This worked for the most part--it took care of the shortcut using the search icon on the phone when starting from the home page, but when I'm in the browser app and then search for something or press the search icon, the phone pulls up search.vzwwap then m.bing. How can I disable the phone from doing that??

I tried renaming /data/app/com.microsoft.mobileexperiences.bing.apk to put ".old" at the end, but that file doesn't exist on my phone.

I was getting the same errors, quite by accident while I was browsing the Droid Razr forum under rooting I found this link ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1321582 ) and trying the latest file (v4) I successfully rooted the Fascinate on the first try. Ironically, I was looking in that other forum trying to determine how easy it is to root other devices on VZW because I want to change. Now maybe with some bloatware removed I can get by for a little while longer, still won't fix the weak radios in the Fascinate unfortunately.

0 idea what I am doing. Tried the FascinateRoot_v02 and it kept saying device not found. So now I tried the V4 mentioned above and got this

CONFIRM ALL THE ABOVE THEN
Press any key to continue...
---STARTING---
---WAITING FOR DEVICE---
abd server is out of date. killing...
*daemon started successfully*

Now what?

Re: Tools and Quick links:pLEASE Read post#1 before posting in th

I am trying to root my samsung fascinate. as far as i can tell, i followed all the directions, but it's not working. Here's what I've done:

downloaded the one click.
changed phone to debugging and dowloaded drivers
ran one click.
it goes all the way through, but when it tries to exploit it says: "mount: operation not permitted"
It then says :
/data/local/tmp/com.sh: cannot create /system/bin/su: read-only file system
/data/local/tmp/com.sh: cannot create /system/bin/busybox: read-only file system
/data/local/tmp/com.sh: cannot create /system/bin/superuser.apk: read-only file system

unable to chmod /system/bin/su: no such file or directory
unable to chmod /system/bin/busybox: no such file or directory

I downloaded one click a second time.
I ensured I'm not on USB storage.

I tried the process again and got the same results. From reading other sites, it sounds like this may be due to the verizone 2.3.5 push.

Can someone help with this?

thanks!
