"Whole" Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Something I’ve not found anything about regarding the fugly hole punch…

Hello, folks,

As folks argue the merits, or lack thereof, of the hole punch, there is one thing I don’t see anyone discussing. So, if anyone knows of a video, or review, thread, or even got a hands on chance in a store to check out, please let me know.

Ok, video watching… if it were me, I’d turn the phone so the hole was in the bottom left/right corner of the screen. Admittedly I’d likely never really notice it there.

However…

GAMING !!

Many, MANY, games out there have controls of some sort or other in EVERY corner of the screen. So, I’m guessing that were you to play in full screen you’d lose the ability to touch/activate the button(s) in that corner? I’m sure that’d make for some fun gaming… NOT !!

I guess you just have to play with that setting that sort of “cuts off” that entire horizontal section where the hole is, in effect, making your screen smaller.

So, explain to me again why I’m buying… PAYING… for a 6.4”, (or whatever size), screen and only able to play games using about 85/90% of it? Isn’t part of having a large screen, beautiful display, being able to play the game that probably has OUTSTANDING graphics, (they keep getting better and better as phones and DISPLAYS get more powerful and bigger).

I can’t find any videos of anyone playing on the S10/10+ phones. There’s some video of some guy playing on an A8, in full screen so the hole is blocking out some of the game, but he never addresses/uses a game that would have a control button there.

<sigh> Looks like it’s me and my Note 9 for life, LOL.

Anyway, if anyone can address this, I’d appreciate it.

Take care.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Yet I still have quite a bit of screen with the notch. I also have an iris scanner and notification led...

I end up with a little less screen space and more functionality.
Good point. People that are not media centric (I am) could care less about a notch or hole. Also, I'd suggest on the other end, OCD folks could be driven mad by a non symmetric hole on the display. Really.

This is almost exactly like the discussions that went on around the LG V10's "second screen" many years ago. "I'm paying for it, so I should be able to have it and control it the way I want".

Actually from my standpoint of gaming controls in the corner, a hole in the top center of the screen would be less negatively impactful than either corner.

Completely inaccurate analogy, sorry.

I owned both the V10 & V20.

I paid for a 5.7" screen that I got 1 billion percent complete use of AND a 1.7"ish screen that I also got complete use of.

In the case of a notch, a teardrop, or hole, you are paying for screen real estate, and you ARE paying for it, hence the diff in price between S10 & S10+, (a part of it anyway), and you are NOT getting full use of the screen.

Apples and bananas.

I'll explain it to you. Samsung is selling a phone with a hole in the display for the camera. If you buy it - that's what you are paying for. Good news is, you don't have to buy it. It's not like you buy it without knowing what you are paying for, and it's not like you bought it without the hole and they came to your house later and punched a hole in there. If you don't like the design, best way to let them know is to buy something else. That's the only way it works. There is no bait and switch here - the compromises are in full view before purchase.

So let me explain it to you...

Hmmmm... I seem to have acquired my Note 9, also with a camera, also with a 6.4" screen, and also with... oh wait... withOUT a hole... and I have full 100% use of the screen.

I can run a game in FULL screen, and not have a dead space in the corner where a game control might be.

I said nothing about bait and switch. But no one, except the Samsung equivalent of rabid Apple fanboys, can deny that you ARE losing usable/viewable screen.

Even more so if do not want the hole intruding on the game or video by using the setting that prevents full screen display... now you REALLY aren't getting the full size screen.

Pros and cons aside, likes or dislikes aside, whether it matters to you or not aside, with a hole punched in the screen you do NOT get full visual use of the display. That's an indisputable FACT. The hole is either in the corner breaking up the visuals, or you set apps/games/videos to not run in full screen so you don't see the hole... either way you don't get full use of the display.

There... explained that well enough for you?

I'm about as big a Samsung fan as you can get...

3x Samsung TVs
2x Samsung Blue ray players
Galaxy skyrocket II
Galaxy S6
Note 3
Note 4
Note 5, (hiatus to LG V10 & 20 waiting out Note 7 fiasco)
Galaxy S8+
Galaxy S9+
Note 9, 512GB version

... so I am by NO means a Samsung hater... I simply hate this design decision... especially the balls on them to do this after their campaign against Apple, including 2, at least, TV commercials making fun of the notch. While a better design than the notch I admit, the concept is the same as a notch.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

I actually don't mind the hole punch, I love my note 9 and how it looks and I always thought the note 7 was the best looking phone Samsung ever made when compared to the competition in its generation. Now I actually think the s10 and s10 plus may be the best looking phones not only Samsung ever made but best looking phones period. When you see those videos with the iPhone XS Max beside the S10 plus, it makes the iPhone XS Max look significantly aged and the notch looks even bigger and pronounced. The s10 line is beautiful, hole punch and all IMO.

Now the real concern should be for those of you who swear by screen protectors. From what I've seen tempered glass is a no go on the s10! The fingerprint sensor won't work.

You explained why you don't like the design. I get all that. I'm not even saying you are wrong. It's personal preference. You have not shown that you are not getting what you are paying for, which is what you said. They are showing you exactly what you are paying for - a phone with a hole in the display where the camera is. The "advantage" is that they can move notifications up in line with the camera that would normally be below the camera. The disadvantage is much of what you already explained. I understand anyone who thinks it's a poor tradeoff. However, they are showing you what you get for your money - you are getting exactly what you pay for - as advertised.

You both make great points you are both right I got a chance to compare the display to the note 9 in the store it does look ever so lightly smaller maybe because it's slightly not as wide or because of the 19:9 aspect ratio

I would be curious to know the dimensions of the screen if you choose the option to leave the camera area out as virtual bezels

Ok, fair enough, point taken and conceded... sort of.

They market a big, beautiful display... they use those words or some akin to them. However, *I* believe that this is not to be true, and disengenuos to an extent.

No bait and switch, no reason anyone should be surprised when they open the box, they know what they're paying for.

I am just of the personal OPINION that the value of the screen, (maybe value or ROI is s better way to put it), isn't there like it used to be.

That tends to be a regular opinion each Note/S generation, and is likely the fact that the S series are more curved than the Note series, so the flat visible portion on the Notes seems greater.

This tends to make the Notes a bit wider, and to some, more difficult to hold.

Understood. I can see both sides - I'm not particularly passionate about it either way. Maybe if I live with the device for a while it will either start to irritate me, or I'll come to ignore it. Not sure. I'll find out when the Note 10 comes around. I use the pen.

Re: Whole Punch Makes a Notch Seem Good

Exactly....all this fuss about notches and holes doesn't amount to much. In the we should all buy what makes us happy. Notches and holes aren't deal breakers for me. As for which is better.... That's up to individual preference.

I agree whether it was a notch or hole I still love the specs of this phone and would get it no matter what I can't wait to get it am so excited.
